Tasting notes
You already know the 1886. Now, for the first time, the 2023 joins the conversation, and tasting all three side by side reveals three distinct personalities shaped by three very different years.
2021 — Sublime Finesse Svelte and brooding, with aromas of crushed blackberry, red cassis, hibiscus, and smoked paprika giving way to a structured, silky palate of steeped flowers, berry compote, and hoisin. Built for decades of aging, but already showing its elegance.
2022 — Napa at Its Most Refined Decadent and expressive, black licorice, violets, blueberry, and a deepening mineral edge of wet stone. The palate moves from dark, ripe fruit up into cocktail cherries and English tea, with savory flickers of soy and mushroom salt throughout. Powerful and gentle in equal measure.
2023 — A Force of Nature Dark and imposing at first, the 2023 is a wine that opens on its own terms. The nose begins as an near-impenetrable wall, espresso, cocoa nib, new leather, pipe tobacco before slowly giving way to rich crème de cassis, blackcurrant, and fresh-cut flowers. The palate follows the same arc: brooding and firm early, then blossoming into layers of fresh black and blue fruit with cool mineral depth, all wrapped in plush, weightless tannins that coat without exhausting. It has the gravitas of a truly great vintage and the remarkable ability to be stunning right now. Set some aside. Open some tonight. You’ll want to do both.
